60 Remote Independent Contractor Jobs for Flexible Work

Are you looking for more flexible work at home jobs? Working as an independent contractor allows you to set your own schedule, choose your own clients (if you are working as a freelancer), and in some cases pick and choose between available projects you want to work on.

And the good news is, there are tons of independent contractor opportunities across many different work at home industries.

Today, I’ve made a list of 60 independent contractor jobs that are completely remote–no need to go into the office!

Working as an Independent Contractor – What to Expect

Tax Obligations

As you may already be aware, the one big thing to keep in mind about being an independent contractor in the US is that you are responsible for reporting your own taxes. You won’t get a W-2 in January for any work you did like you would if you’re working as an employee.

If you did work for a company that uses independent contractors, it’s likely that they may send you a 1099 form if you made over $600 with them in a calendar year. This will show how much they paid you, but there are no taxes withheld because they do not withhold.

You will be responsible for filing this form with your taxes. It’s wise to try to set a little of your income back each month as an independent contractor so you’re not hit with sticker shock in April when you file.

I’d recommend consulting with an accountant prior to starting work as an independent contractor if you’re unsure how much to put back.

Flexibility

While even THINKING about taxes is unpleasant, thinking about flexibility is wonderful! And you will enjoy a lot of that as an independent contractor.

Most work you do from home as an independent contractor doesn’t tie you down to set hours each week, and you can typically work at any time of day or night provided you get your work done on time.

This may vary — I have seen some companies that want you to be available during business hours, for example — but in most cases flexibility is not an issue with IC work.

Benefits

Another downside to being an independent contractor is that you probably won’t get any of the benefits that traditional employees are often eligible to receive.

So things like health insurance, 401K matching, and paid vacation time are pretty much off the table.

Job Security/Stability

You will also need to keep in mind that regular work (depending on what you do) isn’t a given, either.

For example, if you are working at home as a freelance writer, the person or company you’re doing work for may not always have articles for you to write.

You may have months and months of non-stop work, and then it suddenly dries up and you’re left with no work (and no income)!

This is why it’s smart to cover your bases and not put all your eggs in one basket as an independent contractor. If it seems like work is drying up with one of your gigs, make sure you have another gig to fall back on.

Are you a pro at grammar and spelling? The person all your friends and family go to when they need a document looked over?

Then, you may be able to earn some money working at home as a contractor for a company that hires proofreaders and editors.

The companies below don’t all have low barriers to entry, however. Some will require past proofreading experience and/or a college degree.

• Cactus – They offer highly specialized freelance editing work regularly.
• Enago – They are usually hiring remote editors. However, this is not entry-level. You will need experience and college education to qualify.
• Gramlee – Has occasional openings for remote proofreaders/editors.
• Kibin – Read Kibin Review – They do not always have openings for work at home proofreaders, but you can fill out their form to get notified when they do.
• Scribendi – Read Scribendi Review – Open to US and other countries. Rate of pay not listed, but will depend on word count and turnaround time. Pay is via Paypal.
• Scribbr – Read Scribbr Review – Pay is a flat per word rate, but rates vary based on assignment. According to their website, many earn $23 – $25 per hour.
• Composely – 1 year of prior copy editing experience and knowledge of SEO are all required. You’ll also need to pass an assessment test.
• Proofreading Pal – Read ProofreadingPal Review – Must be currently employed by or enrolled as a graduate or postgraduate student in a US college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.5 required.

Search Evaluation / AI Training

Search engine evaluation has been a popular work at home, contract option for many years now. This is basically just evaluating search engine results to match queries to results (slightly more involved but that’s the gist).

In the last few years, some of the companies offering this work are also hiring contractors to do AI (Artificial Intelligence) training. So, there are more options than there used to be to earn money — plus there are now some new companies on the horizon that specialize in just training AI.

If you’re interested, check out these options.

• Appen – Recently rebranded to CrowdGen. Flexible work training AI and doing search engine evaluation.
• TELUS Digital  – Read TELUS Review – Open worldwide. Pay is around $13 hourly or more. Get paid once a month with direct deposit.
• DataForce – Online Data Raters. US. Part-time. As an Online Data Rater you would perform the following: review, evaluate and report on the accuracy of online search queries. Rate of pay not listed.
• Datavio – They usually have lots of search evaluation and crowd work jobs available you can do.

Education

There are many different remote, contract jobs in education. You could work at home as a tutor, teacher, test scorer, test question writer, and more.

Keep in mind that most of these positions will require either teaching experience, tutoring experience, a bachelor’s degree, or current enrollment in college.

• Brainfuse – Read Brainfuse Review – Open to US, not sure about other countries. Get paid to tutor.
• PrepNow – Open to US. Must have at least two years of teaching or tutoring experience and a bachelor’s degree.
• Tutor.com – Read Tutor.com Review – Open to US and Canada. Must be currently enrolled as a college sophomore or higher at an accredited University in pursuit of a 4-year degree, OR have a 4-year degree (or higher) from an accredited University.
• Studypool – Read Studypool Review – Get paid to provide homework help to students who are needing it. Flexible and open worldwide.
• Brainmass – Get paid to be an online teaching assistant at Brainmass. Applicants may register as Academic Experts if they are currently working on, or have obtained, a graduate-level (Masters or PhD) degree from an accredited university.
• Measurement, Inc. – Read Measurement, Inc. Review – Open to US. They hire remote test scorers (readers/evaluators). Pay may be around $15 hourly.
• Pearson – Read Pearson Review – Work at home as a scorer. Open to US and people authorized to work in the US.
• Study.com – Hires work at home test question writers, curriculum reviewers, video creators, content creators, and more in the US as well as in other countries.

Translation

Translation work may be perfect for you if you’re bilingual or multilingual as well as great with grammar and spelling.

• Gengo – Read Gengo Review – Open worldwide. Pay is between 3 and 8 cents per world translated. They pay twice monthly with Paypal.
• TextMaster – Open worldwide. Earn between $1.30 to $9.75 per 100 words translated. Pay is via Paypal.
• Ubiqus – US only and competitive pay. Not much other info available.
• World Lingo – Hires freelance translators to work from home.
• Andovar – Hires freelance translators and editors. Must have relevant experience.
• Smartling – Translators. May be open worldwide. Set your own schedule. Freelance role. Lots of languages they need translators for.

FlexJobs is one of my favorite sites to use for finding remote jobs and learning about new companies that hire remotely.

Most of what I see there when I check the listings pays well above minimum wage and are known companies.
