26 Must-Do Activities to Welcome Fall

Can you believe it’s almost September? As summer winds down and the crisp air of fall starts to settle in, it’s the perfect time to explore, try new things, and soak up the best of what this beautiful month has to offer. Whether you’re looking to jet off on a last-minute adventure or make the most of the weekends at home, I’ve got some great ideas to add to your September bucket list.

PS: How’d you do on your summer bucket list?

Fun Stuff for Your September Bucket List

1. Visit a National Park

National parks are stunning in the fall, plus they have fewer crowds. Win-Win! There are so many to choose from, but you can check out my National Parks Bucket List to plan the perfect trip to one. Yellowstone is one of my favorites:

2. Explore a New Art Gallery or Museum Exhibit

Many galleries and museums have new exhibits opening in September. Spend a day exploring and getting inspired by the art and history on display.

3. Have a Wine Tasting Adventure in Napa Valley, Tuscany or Wherever

September is prime time for wine tasting, with the harvest season in full swing. Whether you’re in California, Italy or wherever else wine grows, visiting a vineyard is an absolute must.

4. Shop Your Local Farmers’ Market

Farmers’ markets are filled with fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and baked goods this time of year. I love going on a Sunday morning, grabbing a green tea, and strolling through the stands for dinner inspiration! (Pro tip: Go early to get the best selection!).

5. Cheer on Your Favorite Team at a Football Game

Football season is here, and there’s nothing like the excitement of a live game. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for a fun day out (I’m the latter of the two!), grab some friends and head to a local game.. And don’t forget to wear your team’s colors.

6. Go Apple Picking at a Local Orchard

There’s something so satisfying about picking your own apples. Find a local orchard and make a day of it. Of course you can take them home and eat them as is, but why not try whipping up an apple pie?

7. Celebrate at Oktoberfest in Munich

Yep, Oktoberfest actually starts in September! You can enjoy traditional German food, music, and, of course, beer! If you’re planning to go, book your accommodation early as it gets pretty crowded!

8. Learn a New Recipe at a Cooking Class

Always wanted to perfect making pasta or learn how to bake the loaf of bread? Sign up for a cooking class! It’s a fun way to learn new skills, meet people, and eat some delicious food. You’ll leave with a full stomach and new recipes to try at home.

9. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you’ve always wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride, September’s calm weather makes it the perfect time to do it. Imagine floating above the treetops and enjoying a bird’s eye view of the fall foliage.

10. Plan a Picnic in the Park

Keep it simple and sweet with a picnic in the park. Pack a basket with your favorite snacks, a cozy blanket, and maybe a good book (like mine: Bucket List Adventuresshameless plug). It’s a lovely way to enjoy the last of the warm weather. (Bonus points if you bring a friend or two to share the experience!)

11. Stargaze on a Clear Night

On a clear night, grab a blanket and head outside for some stargazing. You don’t need a fancy telescope; just find a spot away from city lights and enjoy the view. If you’re not sure what to look for, there are plenty of apps that can help you identify constellations and planets.

12. Hit the Road for a Weekend Getaway

There’s nothing like a road trip to clear your head and have some fun. Pick a destination within a few hours’ drive and make a weekend of it. Explore new places, try local foods, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

13. Explore a Botanical Garden

Botanical gardens are so serene and beautiful, especially in September. Spend a day wandering through the gardens, taking in the sights and scents of the season. Many gardens also host special events and exhibits this time of year.

14. Volunteer for a Local Charity

Giving back to the community is always a rewarding experience. Find a local charity or non-profit organization that speaks to you and see how you can help. Whether it’s serving meals, helping at a fundraiser, or spending time with those in need, every bit makes a difference.

If you don’t know where to start you can go to VolunteerMatch who has opportunities in many major cities or check the United Way website.

15. Go Whale Watching

September is a great time to go whale watching in many parts of the world. It’s an incredible experience to see these giant creatures up close in their natural habitat. Sometimes you don’t even need to take a tour to see them, you can find a scenic spot or short hike that gives you perfect viewing range.

16. Take a Day Trip to a Nearby Town or City

Explore a nearby town or city that you’ve never been to before. It’s a great way to see new places and have a mini-adventure without going too far from home. Don’t forget to make a bucket list itinerary for when you get there!

17. Kayak, Paddleboard or Canoe on a Local Lake or River

Paddle your way through beautiful waterways on a kayak or canoe. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and get some exercise.

18. Dance to the Music at a Festival

Music festivals aren’t just for summer! There are plenty of great ones happening in September, featuring all kinds of genres. Check out local listings or plan a trip to a bigger festival (the Music Festival Wizard has a ton listed on it). And don’t forget your dancing shoes!

19. Get Creative with a Pottery Class

Pottery classes are a fun and creative way to spend an afternoon. You’ll get to make your own unique pieces and maybe even discover a new hobby. Warning: it’s a little harder than you think!

20. Visit a Spa for a Relaxing Day of Pampering

Treat yourself to a day at the spa and enjoy some much-needed relaxation and pampering. A massage, facial, or body treatment can do wonders for your well-being.

21. Take a Class to Learn a New Skill or Hobby

Always wanted to learn how to paint, play an instrument, or speak a new language? September is the perfect time to start. Sign up for a class and challenge yourself to learn something new.

If you’re not sure what activity to do, pick one from my Hobbies Bucket List.

22. Join a Book Club or Start Your Own

Love to read? Join a book club and discuss your favorite books with other readers. Or start your own club with friends and choose books that interest you.

23. Take a Scenic Hike Through Autumn Foliage

Is there anything more magical than the colors of fall? Lace up your hiking boots and head to a nearby park or forest to be in the center of the colorful trees. If you’re near New England or wanting to take a trip to the Pacific Northwest, you’re in for a treat!

24. Go on a Food Tour

Here’s one for your foodie bucket list! Food tours are a delicious way to explore a new city or even your own. You’ll get to try a variety of local dishes and learn about the history and culture behind them..

25. Rejuvenate at a Yoga Retreat

If you’re looking to unwind and recharge, a yoga retreat might be just what you need. Many retreats offer a variety of classes and activities in beautiful, serene settings. It’s a perfect way to relax and connect with like-minded individuals.

26. Go for a Bike Ride

Dust off your bike and hit the trails or the city streets. It’s a fantastic way to explore, get some exercise, and enjoy the fall scenery. If you don’t own a bike, many cities offer rental services at reasonable prices (my favorite is renting an ebike!). Grab a helmet, and let’s go!

There you have it, a whole list of fun and fabulous things to do this September! Whether you’re jetting off to a far-flung destination or staying close to home, there’s no shortage of ways to make this month amazing. So, let’s get out there and make some memories!.
