There’s something special about driving in a rugged vehicle around the different African terrains, spotting the incredibly diverse collection of safari animals. But, I also like to make most things a bucket list challenge, and it was no different while on African safari in Tanzania. The challenge was to spot the most popular wildlife in the parks—and I found them all! So, now I want to share the list with you—if you’re up for the challenge.
Below is the ultimate bucket list of the top animals you can find in the wild in Tanzania.

The Big Five
Let’s kick things off with the Big Five! These are the five most iconic and sought-after animals in Africa—originally named not because of their size, but because of how difficult they were to hunt on foot (yikes!). Now, thankfully, the only shooting we’re doing is with cameras.
1. Elephant: These gentle giants are unforgettable to watch as they roam the plains in big family herds (and yes, they really are that big in person!).
2. Lion: Catching a pride lounging under a tree or stalking the grasslands is like stepping into your very own wildlife documentary.
3. Leopard: These elusive beauties love to hide in the trees, so keep those eyes peeled—you never know when you’ll spot one draped on a branch like royalty.
4. Cape Buffalo: Don’t let their grumpy faces fool you—they’re one of the most dangerous animals in Africa (but totally mesmerizing to watch from a safe distance).
5. Rhinoceros : Rare and powerful, rhinos are sadly hard to find in Tanzania, but spotting one feels like winning the safari jackpot

More Wildlife to See in Tanzania
6. Cheetah – The fastest land animal on Earth, and when they sprint—it’s like nature’s version of a high-speed chase.
7. Giraffe – With their lanky legs and long lashes, they’re the graceful supermodels of the savannah.
8. Zebra – Basically safari’s version of black-and-white striped pajamas, and somehow always adorable.

9. Hippo – You’ll probably hear them before you see them (snorting and splashing in the water), but don’t be fooled—they’re surprisingly fierce.
10. Wildebeest – If you’re lucky enough to witness the Great Migration, these guys are the stars of the show (in the millions!).
11. Hyena – Known for their cackling laughs and powerful jaws—yes, they’re creepy, but also kinda fascinating.
12. Crocodile – Often seen sunbathing near rivers, these ancient predators are nature’s version of a lurking villain.
13. Ostrich – The world’s largest bird can’t fly, but watching them run at full speed is oddly thrilling.

14. Warthog – Quirky and charming in their own scruffy way (think Pumbaa from The Lion King).
15. Jackal – These little canines may look cute, but they’re clever scavengers with sharp instincts.
16. Vervet Monkey – You’ll see these cheeky little guys swinging through trees or sneaking snacks from tourists.
17. Baboon – Bold and social, they’re often hanging out in large troops along the roads or near waterholes.
18. Eland – The largest antelope in Africa, with spiraled horns and a surprisingly graceful gallop.
19. Topi – These reddish-brown antelope love open grasslands and have a look of constant curiosity.
20. Thomson’s Gazelle – Dainty and quick, they zigzag across the plains like little tan lightning bolts.
21. Impala – Sleek and elegant, they’re often seen gracefully bounding across the landscape
22. Kudu – With striking spiral horns and a regal stance, kudus are like the noblemen of the antelope world.
23. Bushbaby – Tiny, wide-eyed, and nocturnal—if you spot one at night, consider yourself lucky!
24. Serval Cat – A mini predator with long legs and a gorgeous spotted coat, usually spotted in tall grass.
25. Crowned Crane: The crowned crane, with its fancy golden crown of feathers, is the only crane that roosts in trees

Traveling Soon? Use my Favorite Resources for Booking Your Trip!
Book Your Flight
Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine, because it checks dozens of airlines so you can easily find the best fare deals. You can also select ‘cheapest month’ to find the lowest fares for your destination (I use this all the time!).
Book Your Accommodations
I use both Booking.com and Expedia for hotels, because each offers a couple different hotel choices and I like to compare the reviews on each one. If you have a group or are looking for more of a home atmosphere, head over to VRBO or AirBNB that has houses, apartments and even just a room for rent in every price range.
Book Your Rental Car
If love the freedom to explore like I do, driving from place to place is the best option! I always book with Discover Cars for the best prices and top brand options.
Book Some Fun Tours!
Viator and Get Your Guide are my go-to search engines for cool bucket list experiences! Each one can have different tours, so check both—why limit yourself, right?
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel can be unpredictable. Whether it’s a last-minute cancellation, an injury, or (ugh) theft, things happen. That’s why I recommend never leaving the country without travel insurance. Here are my faves: Safety Wing and World Nomads.

Check out the Bucket List Journey Amazon Store to find all my favorite travel essentials. Everything from Packing cubes, to travel adapters and toiletry containers to walking shoes.
