ChatGPT vs Nano Banana: Which AI Is Better for Images?

Which AI do you think is currently the best when it comes to images? ChatGPT or Gemini’s Nano Banana? I decided to put both to the test, using the same prompts to see which one can truly deliver when it comes to image generation and editing.

But first, I want to let you know that this isn’t about declaring a “winner” in the traditional sense. This is all about personal taste, aesthetics, and what resonates with you as a viewer. So less of an AI award and more of a curiosity since there have been many AI images sprouting lately.

Though I want to tell you right now. The results amazed me (really)… Let’s see how both performed.

Image Generation: Creating a Realistic Moment in the Mountains

First up, I asked both AIs to create a simple yet challenging scene:

“Create a realistic image of a man drinking coffee in the mountains.”

Here’s ChatGPT’s result:

ChatGPT’s attempt was… not quite there. While the overall concept was okay (portrait and all), the skin texture didn’t look natural, the eyes had that weird lifeless quality that tends to give away that an image is AI-generated. I don’t even understand where it’s looking at.

The creases on his jacket look cool, though!

But other little details, like how the trees look too soft, the little botched finger, they just didn’t feel right.

Now here’s the output from Gemini’s Nano Banana:

Gemini’s Nano Banana, on the other hand, nailed it. The textures were spot-on. The shadows, realistic smile, and even the lighting felt natural. And look at those ice caps in the mountains and the smoke from the mug!

The only strange thing I found was his fingers (would have been perfect), but overall, the image felt much more lifelike.

No competition here, Gemini takes the lead.

Image Editing: Making a Couple on Swings Look Real

Next, I uploaded an image and told both AIs:

“Edit this image. I want to see a cute couple on the swings. Make it as realistic as possible.”

This is the original image (clumsily shot on an iPhone):

Here’s ChatGPT’s result:

ChatGPT’s output left much to be desired. The couple didn’t quite fit in the scene, and the hands and feet looked off, almost like they were added in as an afterthought. The guy even seemed to be floating in mid-air, rather than sitting in the swing! It was clear this was an AI attempt, and not a very convincing one.

But points to adding a reflection in the puddle, though (see man on the right).

Now here’s the output from Gemini’s Nano Banana:

When I gave the same task to Gemini’s Nano Banana, the result was surprising.

The couple blended seamlessly into the background, and the details, from the plants to their facial expressions, looked completely natural. Has AI gotten this good? You could’ve easily mistaken it for a real photograph. The smiles on their faces were genuine, and the composition was perfect. This was AI working at its best.

The Verdict: Nano Banana Wins—But It’s Not That Simple

So, in this quick experiment, Gemini’s Nano Banana took the crown in both image generation and editing.

But here’s the thing, this doesn’t mean ChatGPT or any other AI is out of the game. It’s a matter of evolution. Maybe the prompts I used weren’t the best fit, or maybe ChatGPT just needs a little more time to catch up. AI is always improving, and who knows, next time, ChatGPT could be the one surprising us all.

You might find ChatGPT’s images to be better; it’s also a matter of preference.

That said, Nano Banana really stands out right now. Its ability to produce highly detailed, realistic images is impressive. From the textures to the lighting, it feels like you’re looking at a photograph rather than an AI-generated image. But, as always, we’re just scratching the surface of what AI is capable of.

Final Thoughts

AI in image generation and editing is exciting. Whether you’re creating, designing content, or just having fun with these tools, the potential is huge.

For now, Gemini’s Nano Banana holds the crown, but we’re just getting started. The evolution of AI is rapid, and who knows what’ll come next?
