Air Fryer Cheese on Toast – Today’s recipe is made all the easier, as it cooks in a small energy-saving air fryer, instead of under a grill.
Welcome to my new series for Simple Air Fryer Recipes
Welcome to my new series for Simple Air Fryer recipes, where I’ll be sharing simple recipes using my air fryer. My first recipe is for a British classic, Air Fryer Cheese on Toast.
We all love Cheese on Toast, in fact we love anything on toast, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and of course beans on toast too.
British people will put anything on toast – it’s in our DNA. Not sure what to cook for lunch, just pop something on toast, from meat paste, and sardines as well as the ideas above!
Today’s recipe for Air Fryer Cheese on Toast is made all the easier, as it cooks in a small air fryer, instead of under a grill, which is expensive and not cost effective for a small meal.

When I say a small air fyer, I mean this British classic can cook simply and easily in one drawer of the drawer type air fryers, like my Ninja Foodi Dual Zone Air Fryer.
It’s clean and convenient, and doesn’t send my Smart Meter (electric) in to a tailspin with all the energy that a normal oven grill uses.
It takes between 6 and 8 minutes from start to finish, and it’s really the only way I make cheese on toast now, as well as Welsh Rarebit.
I will be sharing an air fryer Welsh Rarebit recipe soon, as well as recipes for crispy bacon, fried bread (which works like a dream), quick garlic bread, halloumi and even dippy eggs.
I have also just cooked a beautiful pork joint in my Ninja Multi Cooker, with the most amazing crisp, melt-in-the=mouth crackling – so hatch out for that recipe too.
I’ve shared some basic tips below, as air fryers do vary, but this really is a fabulously simple recipe, which I’ve made many times since I got my first air fryer, so enjoy! Karen
Cooking Notes
- Use a good melting or hard cheese, such as Cheddar, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Comte, Lincolnshire Poacher etc.
- Blue cheese is also lovely when cooked on toast, serve with pickled walnuts.
- Serve with chutney, pickles, Worcestershire sauce or Hendersons Relish.
- Thick, sliced white bread is best, but sourdough and wholemeal also work, depending on taste.
- Press the cheese down before cooking, and don’t put the bread on a high rack, as the air will blow the cheese around.
- Similarly, sit the bread firmly on any liners, so they don’t blow around.

Ingredients
- 2 slices of Farmhouse style white bread, thick is best
- 15g butter, softened
- 100g grated cheese, such as Cheddar, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester etc
- Black pepper
- Chutney, Hendersons Relish, Branston Pickle, to taste
Instructions
- I never bother to -pre-heat my air-fryer, but you can pre-heat it if you wish, to 200C.
- Butter one side of both slices of bread.
- Place the buttered sides of the bread down in your air fryer basket or drawer – I use a liner.
- Cook for 2 minutes until it is lightly tossted and firm.
- Take the toast out, and add the grated cheese to the buttered side, covering all the bread as much as possible, press down lightly on the cheese.
- Place the cheese topped bread back in the air fryer, and cook for 6 minutes, or until has melted and is browned to your liking.
- Remove the cheese on toast and serve straight away with chutney, pickles, Worcestershire sauce or Hendersons Relish.
