Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit – Lavender and Lovage

Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit – Following on from my Air Fryer Cheese on Toast, as promised is my latest recipe for Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit.

Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit

Following on from my Air Fryer Cheese on Toast, as promised is my latest recipe for Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit.

This took just 6 minutes to cook in my air fryer, and two large slices of bread fitted perfectly in my Ninja Foodi Dual Zone Air Fryer.

Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit

I always have a batch of rarebit mixture in the fridge – you can make it ahead of time, ready for spreading onto toast for a quick meal when time is short.

This all goes back to when we ran our B & B, as we offered Welsh Rarebit on Crumpets for breakfast, as well as the usual full cooked English (or Welsh) breakfast.

Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit

Today’s recipe for Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit was made using Jacksons of Yorkshire’s FABULOUS Tiger Bread Bloomer.

We both love their bread, and I have worked with them in the past, here: Jacksons of Yorkshire Recipes.

We both love their bread, and I have worked with them in the past, here: Jacksons of Yorkshire Recipes.

This time, they sent me some vouchers to buy whatever bread I fancied from their range of breads and bloomers, and so tiger bread it was this time.

Any good quality bread, or homemade bread would work for this recipe, as long as it’s not too thin – you need a nice thick-ish slice of bread.

Air Fryer Welsh Rarebit

Serve this Welsh Rarebit for breakfast, brunch, lunch or as I did, as part of a Sunday High Tea, for one of my weekly tea tray suppers.

Adjust the time and temperature according to you air fryer, this worked for me at 200C for 6 minutes, but each air fryer is different.

High Tea

I used Cheddar cheese, but any good melting cheese will work, such as Lancashire, Cheshire, Red Leicester and my local cheese, Lincolnshire Poacher.

Ingredients

  • 225g grated extra mature Cheddar cheese
  • 2 large free-range eggs (beaten)
  • 100ml milk
  • 1 heaped teaspoon ready-made English mustard
  • 10 splashes of Hendersons Relish
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sliced bread
  • Butter or spread

Instructions

    1. Mix the first six ingredients together until smooth. Spoon or pour into a saucepan and heat gently until the cheese has melted, and the mixture is thick but still fairly runny.

    2. Take off the heat and allow to cool, the mixture will set as it cools and become stiff. At this stage, you can store it in a covered container in the fridge for up to five days.

    3. Once the mixture has been made and cooked, toast your bread and then butter it. Spoon and spread some of the mixture over the top of the toast, spreading it quite thickly.

    4. Place the covered toast into your air fryer drawer, or basket, and set to AIR FRY and 200C, for 6 minutes.

    5. Cook until the cheese mixture has browned and is bubbling. You may have to cook them a little longer, it depends on you air fryer.

    6. Serve straight away. Great with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, as well as crispy bacon.

    7. NB: This mixture is enough to cover 4 large slices of bread. Not suitable for freezing but keeps in the fridge for up to five days.
