What do you get when you mix coastal charm, fresh seafood, and a splash of adventure? Bodega Bay! One moment, you’re hiking along the coastline, and the next, you’re devouring a plate of freshly shucked oysters at a seaside spot. This cute northern California town offers the perfect mix of scenic hikes, quaint shops, and peaceful shoreline strolls.
But there’s so much more! From flying kites to exploring local art galleries, the list of things to do in Bodega Bay is as endless as the ocean views. Let’s get to it—here’s everything you need to know to plan your perfect weekend getaway.
Planning Tips for Visiting Bodega Bay
Best Time of Year to Go
In Bodega Bay, the dry season (roughly from May to October) is when the weather is at its best. There’s mild, sunny days with a little coastal breeze, and hardly any rain. Temperatures usually range from a comfortable 60°F to 75°F, but just a heads up—this is when tourists and locals flock to town, so things might be a bit busier.
I’ve been during every season and most recently went in December. While there was a chill in the air, the sunshine more than made up for it. But, be warned the fog at that time of year is more common than not.
How Many Days to Spend in Bodega Bay
Bodega Bay is the kind of place where you can pop in for a quick escape or settle in for a longer stay. Sure, you could cover the must-see spots in a day (fresh seafood feast? Check. Scenic hike along Bodega Head? Double check), but you’d be missing out on so many hidden gems. If you can, carve out a weekend—two to three days is perfect. This gives you time to soak in the sunsets, savor wine at local vineyards, and maybe even spot some migrating whales without feeling rushed.

Getting Around
Getting around Bodega Bay is best done with a rental car. The area is spread-out, and having your own car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Unlike city centers, there’s no public transport system to rely on, so a rental car is key for hopping between scenic spots. You can check Discover Cars for the best pricing.
Where to Stay
The Lodge at Bodega Bay is the perfect retreat while you’re staying in Bodega Bay. Recently crowned the #1 Hotel in the World by Condé Nast Traveler readers, this hotel offers everything you need to unwind. It’s located right next to Doran Beach, you can stroll from your room to the shore in minutes or enjoy a scenic walk along the Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail, a peaceful loop through wetlands where birdwatchers can spot Great Blue Herons and other wildlife.
The lodge strikes the perfect balance of seclusion and convenience, with cozy fire pits, nature trails, and easy access to Bodega Bay’s cute shops, fresh seafood restaurants, and top hiking spots.
The on-site amenities only elevate the experience. Dining at Drake’s is a must, whether you’re indulging in a fancier meal in the main dining room or sipping wine by the fire at the Fireside Lounge during sunset. The spa offers treatments like the Sonoma Coastal Massage, while the outdoor hot tub and sauna provide the ultimate relaxation. T
he rooms are equally inviting, with fireplaces, Nespresso machines, and breathtaking views of the bay. Whether you’re toasting marshmallows for nightly s’mores, enjoying a glass of wine by a fire pit, or simply taking in the serene surroundings, every detail at The Lodge is designed to help you relax and recharge.

What to Do in Bodega Bay (Top 5 Things to Do)
Hike On A Coastal Trail
One of the most popular coastal trails is the Bodega Head Trail, a 1.67-mile (2.7 km) trail that takes you around the iconic Bodega Head peninsula, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Another great trail is the Pinnacle Gulch Coastal Access Trail, which goes through a gulch that leads to a beach at the bottom.
Go Wine Tasting
Just because you’re on the coast, doesn’t mean you can’t do a little wine tasting. Start your vino adventure at Sonoma Coast Vineyards, where the cool coastal climate creates ideal conditions for producing some great wines.
For a truly immersive experience, make your way to Fort Ross Vineyards, located on the hills of Fort Ross State Historic Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This family-owned winery specializes in cool-climate wines, including their acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Visit a Filming Location of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” at Potter Schoolhouse
Pay homage to a piece of cinematic history by visiting the iconic filming locations of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” in Bodega Bay and the surrounding area.
One of the most memorable filming locations is the Potter Schoolhouse, situated inland in the town of Bodega. However, it is now a private residence, so you can only admire it from the outside. Adjacent to the schoolhouse, you’ll find another significant site from the film, the St. Teresa of Avila Church.
Enjoy the Beach
You can’t really go to Bodega Bay without hitting up one of the beaches, and there are plenty to choose from! Here are my top picks:
Buy Treats at Patrick’s of Bodega Bay Salt Water Taffy
Don’t miss stepping into the recognizable pink and white shop of Patrick’s, where a variety of handmade saltwater taffy will satisfy your sweet cravings. From classic flavors like vanilla (my favorite!) and watermelon to enticing mixed taffy packs such as the Dessert Mix and Berries and Cream, there’s a taffy for every taste.

What + Where to Eat (My Top 3)
Bodega’s food scene is loaded with yummy seafood spots and these are my top 3. But if you’d like all my favorite restaurant picks, check out my list of the best Bodega Bay restaurants.
Fishetarian Fish Market
This spot is hands-down my favorite casual go-to whenever I’m in Bodega Bay. From their perfectly crispy fish & chips and creamy clam chowder to the oh-so-delicious shrimp tacos, every bite is a win. The best part? They’re all about sustainable sourcing, so you can enjoy your meal without a shred of eco-guilt. It’s a laid-back place with mostly outdoor seating where you can grab a quick bite while soaking up the salty sea breeze.
Rocker Oysterfeller’s
If Southern comfort food meets coastal seafood sounds like your vibe, then Rocker Oysterfeller’s is a must-visit. While they’re famous for their oysters Rockefeller (obviously!), it was their clam chowder that was my favorite. It’s rich without being overly creamy and served with a side of warm, garlicky bread that’s perfect for dipping—pure comfort on a cool Bodega Bay day.
Drakes Sonoma Coast
If you’re craving a more upscale dining experience in Bodega Bay, Drakes Sonoma Coast at The Lodge at Bodega Bay is the place to be. The Lodge was just voted the #1 hotel in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, so you know you’re in for something special. Their farm-to-table approach means you’ll be indulging in fresh, local seafood that’s been elevated to perfection.

Book Your Flight
Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine, because it checks dozens of airlines so you can easily find the best fare deals. You can also select ‘cheapest month’ to find the lowest fares for your destination (I use this all the time!).
Book Your Accommodations
I use both Booking.com and Expedia for hotels, because each offers a couple different hotel choices and I like to compare the reviews on each one. If you have a group or are looking for more of a home atmosphere, head over to VRBO or AirBNB that has houses, apartments and even just a room for rent in every price range.
Book Your Rental Car
If love the freedom to explore like I do, driving from place to place is the best option! I always book with Discover Cars for the best prices and top brand options.

Viator and Get Your Guide are my go-to search engines for cool bucket list experiences! Each one can have different tours, so check both—why limit yourself, right?
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel can be unpredictable. Whether it’s a last-minute cancellation, an injury, or (ugh) theft, things happen. That’s why I recommend never leaving the country without travel insurance. Here are my faves: Safety Wing and World Nomads.
