Celebrating the BER months with Homemade Jam Recipes – A selection of jam and jelly recipes to make with autumn’s bountiful fruit & berry harvest

Homemade Jams and Jellies for the Autumn Breakfast and Teatime Table

Here we are, the second day of September, and Meteorological Autumn, which by the way, is different to Astronomical Autumn.
The Met Office in the UK explains the difference: “Usually, when we talk about the first day of autumn we are referring to the astronomical autumn which is defined by the Earth’s axis and orbit around the Sun. This year autumn begins on 22 September 2025 and ends on 21 December 2025.

Meteorological seasons are derived by splitting the year into four periods made up of three months each. These seasons are split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar, making it easier for meteorological observing and forecasting to compare seasonal and monthly statistics“
By the meteorological calendar, the first day of autumn is always 1 September; ending on 30 November.
I love autumn, it’s my favourite season – I suppose I am drawn to the cosy and seemingly slower lifsetyle that autumn heralds.
These BER months of September, October, November and December hold many riches for me; from bountiful harvests of fruit, berries and vegetables, to crackling log fires, sparkling fairy lights and soft candlelight.

Autumn is also my main preserving season, a time to save and preserve fruit and vegetables – to make fruity jams, glowing jellies, spiced pickled onions, aromatic chutneys and countryside pickles.
Today I am sharing some favourite Jam and Jelly recipes from the Lavender & Lovage archives. Using the season’s harvest of plums, brambles, apples, pears, and late summer berries, they are all welcome on our breakfast and teatime table.

I hope this list provides you with some seasonal inspiration, and if you do make any of these recipes, please do let me know, Karen
