A fabulous seasonal recipe for Slow Cooker Treacle Glazed Bacon – made with a Bacon Loin Joint, it’s tender and packed with flavour.
Works well with Ham and Gammon Joints
I am very proud of my latest recipe creation for Slow Cooker Treacle Glazed Bacon – made with a Bacon Loin Joint, it’s tender and packed with flavour.
I bought my two bacon loin joints from Morrisons – they are gently smoked over beech wood and have a delectable smoky flavour, which marries so well with the treacle glaze.
Cooking this type of joint of meat in the slow cooker, renders it tender and is “hands free” cooking, as well as economical for energy usage.
I have many slow cooker recipes on Lavender & Lovage, which are family favourites, including a recipe for Fruity Aromatic Slow Cooker Ham (Gammon).
According to Delia Smith, a bacon joint is a piece of cured pork, made with any cut of meat, unlike gammon and ham, which are cuts from the hind leg of a side of bacon after curing.
This is backed up by the British Love Pork website, who confirm “Both gammon and ham are cuts from the hind legs of a pig, and are either salted, brined, or smoked”.
Anyway, back to my recipe for Slow Cooker Treacle Glazed Bacon. This recipe would be amazing for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day or New Year’s Eve and Day.
When I cooked this last week, I served it hot with steamed seasonal veggies, mashed potato and homemade chutney.
I then made a split pea soup with the offcuts, and served it twice more in sandwiches, salad, and as part of a Ploughman’s Lunch.
It really is the joint of meat that just keeps on giving! It would have also been amazing in a pie, such as this recipe for Christmas Eve Fireside Supper Chicken & Ham Pie
I hope you enjoy this recipe if you make it, and please do leave a comment below how you served it, and for what occasion too! Karen

Bacon, ham and gammon are interchangeable for this type of cooking, and are very similar, so it’s worth mentioning the slight differences between them.

Ingredients
- 1 x 1.6kg to 2kg smoked bacon loin joint (I used 2 x 800g joints)
- 1 litre cola, diet cola works too
- 1 onion, peeled and cut into quarters
- 2 sticks of celery, chopped into quarters
- 2 large carrots, cut in half or quarters
- 3 to 4 fresh bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon mixed peppercorns
- Glaze:
- 4 tablespoons black treacle
- 4 tablespoons demerara sugar
Instructions
1. Place the bacon joint or joints into the slow cooker, then add the vegetables, spices and the cola. Top up with water so the liquid just covers the bacon.
2. Cook on high for 4 to 5 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours, or a combination of both, Some slow cookers have an Auto setting that switches to keep warm for the last few hours. Remove the bacon from the slow cooker.
3. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/400F/Gas mark 6 and place the bacon in a roasting tin. Mix the treacle and sugar together ands brush or spread the glaze over the cooked bacon joint/s.
4. Spoon a couple of tablespoons of cooking liquor into the roasting tin from the slow cooker, and roast the bacon joint/s for 20 minutes, basting every 5 minutes, until the bacon is glazed and is glossy and slightly sticky.
5. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 30 minutes, before carving and serving. Is also wonderful when served cold.
