Fried Bread! A Greasy Spoon classic, and breakfast staple for many during the war. My recipe today for Traditional & Air Fryer Fried Bread, shares two methods of making it.

Firstly, the traditional way, which is as it says on the box, bread fried in fat in a frying pan. The 2nd way is slightly healthier, and less mess, as the bread is “fried” in a air fryer.

Both ways work well with a Full English Breakfast, or even with fried bacon, poached eggs, or just bacon and eggs too.

This is my latest recipe in my lates series for Air Fryer recipes. Today’s recipe for Traditional & Air Fryer Fried Bread was air fried in my Ninja Dual Zone two drawer Air fryer.

However, it can be cooked in any air fryer that has room to place slices of bread horizontally in the basket, or drawer.

  • White bread works best for fried bread.
  • For a more slimming version, spray the bread on both sides with low-fat spray oil.
  • If the grease of fat you are using has solidified, spoon it on to the bread, and then spread it with a knife for the air fyer version.
  • Thick slices of bread work best when being pan fried.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick slices of white bread
  • Bacon grease, oil, or dripping
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. TRADITIONAL METHOD: Heat the bacon grease, oil, or dripping in a large non-stick frying pan that is big enough to take both slices of bread.
  2. Fry the bread for 3 to 4 minutes before turning them over, and frying for a further 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bread has soaked up the grease, oil or dripping, is golden brown and crisp on the outside.
  3. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and serve immediatley with accompaniments such as fried eggs, poached eggs, fried or grilled bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans and black pudding.
  4. AIR FRYER METHOD: Brush the sliced bread with the bacon grease, oil or dripping, on both sides.
  5. Line the drawers or the basket of the air fryer with baking paper, and place the bread on the paper.
  6. Set the heat on the air fryer to 200C and cook on the AIR FRY setting for 3 to 4 minutes, before turning the bread over for a further 4 to 5 minutes, or until it is crisp and golden brown.
  7. Serve immediately as before in step 3.

Notes

White bread works best for fried bread.

For a more slimming version, spray the bread on both sides with low-fat spray oil.

If the grease of fat you are using has solidified, spoon it on to the bread, and then spread it with a knife for the air fyer version.

Thick slices of bread work best when being pan fried.
