30+ Prayer Prompts for An Unbelieving Spouse

I’m convinced that here on earth, our biggest power as a believer is PRAYER!

But it’s not just that. We are commanded to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). One of those things you can (and should) pray for is your marriage, especially if you have an unbelieving spouse.

Prayer changes things and when you really take inventory of things, making a list of things you’re praying for, or learning to pray for very specific things, you can see real change! You CAN have an exemplary marriage!

Check out these 50 prayer prompts for an unbelieving spouse below and watch God work in your marriage!!! 🙏

30+ Prayer Prompts for An Unbelieving Spouse

Grab your prayer journal (or a paper and pencil) and start writing down all the things you think about to pray for your husband as you go through the following list…

  1. Think about how he treats you. Maybe he “forgets” your birthday or things like Mother’s Day. How can you pray that God improves his actions toward you?
  2. Does he have a bad attitude toward you? Toward your kids? Toward your family? How can you pray his attitude would improve? Is his attitude because of an external issue? Maybe he’s really tired all the time from working so hard so he takes it out on you. How can you help him get more rest? What can you pray specifically that would help him get more rest?
  3. Is he super controlling? Can you pray that he realizes that controlling someone else in the way that he’s doing is not godly?
  4. Salvation. He’s not saved so you definitely want to pray about his salvation, every single day! Pray that God leads someone into his life that he will listen to (whether that be you or someone else) and give his life to God.
  5. Lining up your heart to God’s will. Think about all the things that GOD would want you to pray for your husband.
  6. Have you prayed for your husband’s public character? Is he a morally upstanding guy? If not, praying for his character to others is a great thing. Remember that we are to do good to our husband, all of our days (Proverbs 31:12).
  7. Can you pray for your husband’s success? You love your husband, so of course you want him to be successful at his job. Pray that he likes his job, that they treat him well there, that he does well financially, and that he’s appreciated at his job.
  8. Pray for the protection of your marriage. Satan would just LOVE to destroy it. Pray that God keep you and your husband together and your marriage super strong.
  9. Pray for unity and peace. If you fight a lot, pray that you guys stop fighting and have peace in your home.
  10. Does your husband do p*orn? If he does, pray that God will get ahold of his heart and that he will stop. That kind of stuff destroys a marriage. Men’s brains cannot tell the difference between it being real or imagined, so they numb their conscience over time and end up doing things like cheating because they’ve already been cheating for so long. Definitely pray for this one more than anything!
  11. Do you have to ask your husband to buy stuff? If so, you can pray that you’ll find a way to make your own money so you don’t feel so controlled all the time.
  12. Does your husband have bad habits? Smoking, drinking, etc. that affects his quality of life. You can pray that he gives those things up.
  13. Is he a good leader? If he’s not or if he can improve, it’s a great thing to pray about!
  14. Does your husband try to stop you from going to church? If so, you must obey the Lord and continue to go. Do everything you can to help him understand why church is so important for the believer and pray that he changes his stance on it.
  15. Is he opposed to the Bible? Pray that God instills a desire to learn and grow and find out more about the Bible and what being a Christian is all about.
  16. How’s your communication? Do you guys set time aside, on a regular basis, to talk and spend time together? If you don’t, you can pray and make plans to do so.
  17. Do you trust each other? If not, you can pray to God that He will cultivate in both of you more trust for the other.
  18. Do you guys fight a lot about finances? If so, pray about it! Pray that God will help you find a solution to handling finances
  19. Is there bitterness or unforgiveness in your marriage? If so, you can pray that God quench all bitterness and allow the offended party to forgive the other.
  20. Does your husband constantly lie? If so, pray that God will show him how important it is to tell the truth. It will definitely build trust in your marriage!
  21. Do you have different goals in life? If you do, you can pray that your goals will line up with each other and get on the same page as one another.
  22. Is he selfish? If he is, pray that God will help his heart to stop being selfish all the time.
  23. Is your husband messy? Is he a pack-rat? Pray that your husband be inspired to clean up after himself and to realize, you’re his wife, not his maid. It’s not respectful to you for him to be messy. Pray that God changes his heart and actions.
  24. Has your husband dropped the D-word…divorce? If he wants a divorce, pray your guts out that God keeps you together and provides unity and togetherness.
  25. Does he say, “I love you?” Does he show you love? If he doesn’t, it’s a very good idea to pray for those things! You definitely do not want to have a loveless marriage.
  26. Does he want you to participate in sexual acts that make you super uncomfortable? If so, you want to bring that to the Lord and express your concerns to not only God but your husband as well.
  27. Are you in a rut or bored in your marriage? If you are, pray and seek for ways to get out of the rut.
  28. Does your husband listen to you when you speak? If not, pray about that as well.
  29. Are you both dealing with stress or stressful situations outside of your marriage that affect your relationship? If so, take it to the Lord in prayer.
  30. Is your husband always gone and you feel alone? If he’s working a lot or always gone, pray about it. Tell God that you want to spend time with him but circumstances are what they are and you can’t. Ask God to fix the problem.
  31. Do you spend time together? Do you actively seek ways to cultivate a best friend’s relationship with each other (here’s some date night ideas). If you don’t, pray about it!
  32. Does your husband not appreciate you? If he doesn’t, pray that God will show him why it’s so important to appreciate each other.

Maybe you have been praying for your husband for a long time, and you are tired. You have grown weary of the stress of being the believing spouse in an unbelieving home and a husband with a hard heart. It can be tough living with an unbelieving spouse.

The temptation to leave God and belong to the world can be strong. But, do not lose heart, keep praying and use those prayer prompts as a guide to fight for your marriage!

The Bible says in due time you will reap if you do not grow weary. Ask God to help you stay strong and not grow weary in praying for your husband.
